IDC'S State-of-the-Art Digital Library System Supports Launch of Thai Learning Centre

July 26, 2006
Ottawa, ON – July 26, 2006 – – International Datacasting Corporation (TSX:IDC) today announced that its SuperFlex DVB satellite datacasting system and Datacast XD content distribution and management software was instrumental in the launch of Sat-Ed's “Room for Life” e-learning centre, in the tiny village of Baan Nong Pai in rural Sakhon Nakorn, located in Northeast Thailand. The 'Room for Life' provides email, e-commerce, video conferencing and an educational Video-On-Demand (VOD) digital library to the residents and students of this remote area.
IDC provided Sat-Ed’s Learning Centres with a state-of-the-art digital library system that offers access to television-based educational material, as well as multimedia content on PCs, via video-on-demand and playout from Web servers. The 'Room for Life' e-learning and VOD system is based upon IDC’s SuperFlex SFX2100 DVB/IP satellite multimedia receivers with integrated Datacast XD¯ a fully scalable and feature-rich content management and distribution software ideal for broadband multimedia file transfer via satellite, including streaming and store-and-forward data storage. The digital library system represents Thailand’s first use of IPTV and Video-On-Demand (VOD) in a classroom and training facility.
A recent report on this initiative—developed by IDC’s distributor in Thailand, John Hawker of Sat-Ed, was featured on CNN's monthly series 'Global Challenges', a program that involves travels around the world to bring news reports on sustainable development in remote rural areas around the world.
“The 'Room for Life' facility is a meeting place that provides the villagers of Nong Pai, equal access to the best educational material and videos Thailand has to offer,” said Sat-Ed CEO John Hawker. “Students use the system to enroll in school programs and distance learning courses. They can now study and continue to help their parents on the farm. The local farmers can access digital content pertaining to agricultural techniques and growing procedures, which is extremely important to sustain future development in these rural areas.”
Gary Carter, VP & Chief Technology Officer of International Datacasting said, “This is a very important project for us, for Sat-Ed, and for the people of Thailand. The value of access to education is beyond measure, and Sat-Ed’s platform using our hybrid technology of combining a satellite-fed web server with IP content delivery is going a long way toward resolving the communications gridlock in this country’s communities.”
The deployment of IDC’s systems was timed to coincide with Shin Satellite’s launch of its new iPSTAR Broadband Satellite System, which provides satellite-based last-mile broadband Internet services to Asia and Australia. With satellite IP broadcasting, data can be sent to thousands of centres simultaneously and villagers can access content either in the centre on a PC or through a set top box connected to their TV at home.
The “Room for Life” site in Sakhon Nakorn is the first of 75 sites planned in conjunction with Thai Chambers of Commerce throughout the country, and future plans call for the “Room for Life” learning facilities to be expanded to hundreds of sites in villages throughout Thailand. IDC is set to contribute to these sites with additional receivers and content-management software.
